The Chron's token conservative on tech hegemony

It's always fun when things are so screwy in town that the leading conservative writer at the Chron starts to agree (even just a little) with the crazy commie at this blog.

Debra Saunders is unhappy with the way the Apple store is moving into Union Square. Not because she hates Apple; she's a Republican who loves all business. Not because she wants to save the fountain or thinks the urban design is ugly; she's all for new development.

The problem she has is the same problem so many of us have with Sean Parker's wedding: The technoriche don't have to play by the same rules as everyone else:

But I think some locals object to the plan because Apple gets kid-glove treatment. Small business owners have to jump through many hoops to accommodate the Special City's sensibilities - or else. There's an ordinance, for example, that prohibits chain stores in certain neighborhoods. Yet when the high-tech money knocks, the door is wide open.

Yep. Small businesses don't get special tax breaks out of the Mayor's Office. Local merchants don't get these kinds of special exemptions when they want to open or build something. (Try to open a nightclub in this town.)

When hi-tech money knocks, the door is wide open. And even the conservatives are getting sick of it.

Americans put such a massive about of time, effort, education and energy into trying to achieve success is because money and power can get things done?

Yes, I know, it's shocking, but people actually like having money and power because then the world goes a little more the way you want it to.

What else would be the point of all those millions of people striving for decades to build success and prosperity if, in the end, it was totally useless for getting things done that you want?

That's the whole point of money!

If some unknown little guy with absolutely no money wanted to build a huge glitzy new store in Union Square I bet that he wouldn't get the same preferential treatment that Apple is getting.

Saunders turns liberal sometimes (she is a major backer of all efforts to release nonviolent drug offenders from prison, for example). She is willing to be an unorthodox conservative at times.

Tim, have you ever violated the Progressive Code of Honor?

Have you ever assumed a non-knee-jerk attitude, ever disagreed with the progressive bethren on anything?

Or is anybody who violates the Progressive Orthodoxy merely a troll?

and why someone like Saunders is more interesting to read than Redmond.

Tim Redmond doesn't respond to posts, Troll XIV.

He issues his diatribes and then leaves to make another pronouncement on another day. You see, we are all nothing but trolls. We do not merit response.

Johnny AW, to his credit, responds to his posts.

cares about (what little remains of) his credibility.

JAW is new and wants to take people on. Of course, he loses every debate here but, like an outclassed boxer who keeps getting knocked down, he keeps getting back up for more punishment.

In all fairness, he does respond when he can.

It is usually to say something to the effect that what he said is true because he says it is.

But when someone comes up with proof showing that something that he wrote was nonsense he never acknowledges it.

Awhile back he admitted in a comment that he doesn't like rich people because they are boring. Maybe someone told him to avoid the comments after that.

Some time back, I tried to get Tim Redmond to explain why he supports the seniority system for SFUSD employees without exception. I brought up the huge hurdles to getting an employee fired, even for rape, how incompetent teachers exploit the system, knowing they can never be fired.

I cited examples of specific teachers who are still on the district payroll despite having seemingly retired, despite having been charged with theft.

Tim didn't want to respond. So I joined the Troll Contingent and named myself after Louis the XIV.

Tim doesn't do the discussion thing. Tim doesn't do the debate thing. Tim only makes pronouncements a la Stalin or Francisco Franco.

All dissenters from his orthodoxy are nothing but trolls.
