The Warriors Arena: Art Agnos v. Gary Radnich

Here's a fun one: former Mayor Art Agnos debating the Warriors arena with Gary Radnich and Larry Krueger. Radnich has always been my favorite sports guy, ever since his days on KRON TV (although Kruk and Kuip are the best live-action announcers), and Agnos is my favorite ex-mayor. (Lord, I gave him a hard time when he was in office, and he sometimes deserved it, but he's been great as a former.)

The two go at it -- mostly in good spirts, although Agnos can't avoid getting in a dig about male enhancement.

The sports guys talk about how great it would be for San Francisco to have another tourist attraction (and more customers for the city's number one industry.) Agnos points out that it's not just a basketball arena we're talking about -- it's a huge shopping mall, with more square footage than all the restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf (wow, that's what Agnos says, I didn't realize it was so big), plus a highrise hotel, plus a highrise condo tower.

Radnich likes to compare the new arena to the Giants stadium, which is on the waterfront but not built on the water, on a concrete slab in the Bay, but the Giants didn't build two highrises and a mall.

It's not a long debate, but it's interesting.

some retail at a sports arena. Nor why waterfront residences are in any way inconsistent with waterfront development. Jack London Square in Oakland, for instance, has all of that and is now vying to move the A's to a new stadium there.

Sounds perfectly logical to me.

It doesn't surprise me that Tim Redmond thinks so highly of Art Agnos, a mayor who was so incompetent that he was thrown out of office after only one term and on whose watch the homeless problem got totally out of control. Remember Camp Agnos? Agnos himself proposed a waterfront park in a location that would have far worse then the current location of ATT Park. The real reason Agnos opposes the Warriors arena is that he blames Rose Pak, a Lee ally, for his election loss in 1991. In other words, his opposition has nothing to do with the merits of the proposal its just petty politics at its worst.

every mayor since then even more. Agnos was the only "progressive" mayor ever elected here, so he has to pretend to be loyal to him even though he was, as you note, incompetent.

But in fact it was the Agnos debacle that ensured that no progressive would ever win the mayor's office again and so, in some ways, Tim should hate him for that.

The curse of Agnos lives on.

remember all of those 90k/year "deputy mayors" he appointed?

remember how he let the homeless problem spin out of control and into the hands fo down town?

thanks to this clown, we got Mayor Jordan (fail) Mayor Brown (FAIL) and Mayor Fucking Newsom (CLOWNLIKE FAIL) and now Cutie Boy Lee (FUCK THIS GUY)

and all along the way progressives celebrated about that "rallying at the end of the election" that got them NOTHING.

OOPS

Now the progressive paper is a corporate Chipotle chain store. Hey can we curtail the chain paper newsracks now?
