Compton's Cafeteria Riots 46th anniversary City Hall steps, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett, SF; Facebook: 46th anniversary of the Compton's Cafeteria riot- march and celebration. 5pm, free. In 1966, cross dressing was illegal, many gay bars shunned gender non-conforming people, and transgender people congregated at one of the few places they could catch a break, Compton's Cafeteria in the Tenderloin. When the police raided the cafeteria one night, it sparked a riot that transformed the transgender movement in the United States. Supervisor Scott Wiener, clergy, bad-asses who were there, and even people from OccuPride will be at this anniversary celebration and march.

Jean Bosco Bakunzi is the founder of Uburanga Arts Studio, a space for artists in Kigali, Rwanda. Bakunzi is a genocide survivor, and was eight years old when his parents were killed. He founded the art studio, he says, because "I believe that art has the power to heal people mentally, emotionally, and spiritually because of how it has healed me." Bakunzi's art will be on display in Progressive Grounds, and he will give a talk at 8:15.
