Some interesting openings this week, starting with Trou Normand (140 New Montgomery, SF. www.trounormandsf.com), inside the historic Pacific Telephone Building in SoMa. It's from Thad Vogler of Bar Agricole, so yeah, there will be awesome booze there. And good ice. Cocktails include Armagnac, Cognac, and Calvados. (Be prepared to throw back a traditional shot of Calvados, a French brandy, in preparation for or during a big meal to "make room" with "a Norman hole" — hence the name, Trou Normand).Read more »

TABLEHOPPING Not only is the Healdsburg area so damn beautiful (I'm talking about you, Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys) but there are some pretty fab dining and drinking options — and deals in the winter off season. There's always something new happening up there, so let's start planning your next overnighter.Read more »

There are a bunch of new openings to cover this week, starting with the new location of ICHI Sushi and NI Bar (3282 Mission, SF. www.ichisushi.com) in Bernal, which is double the size of ICHI's previous spot — and looking very spiffy. You'll find a 30-seat sushi counter in the front along with some table seating, plus an omakase counter, which will be reservation only. Read more »

BALLIN' ON A BUDGET

This week features some smaller openings around town, plus new places to go for brunch, and, how charming, they're not all gonna leave you broke. Besides, some of us self-employed types are still reeling from those pesky tax quarterlies that were just due, blergh.Read more »

A look back at the new restaurants, bars, and bites of 2013

TABLEHOPPING How was your New Year's Eve? Did you tell 2013 to not let the door hit it on the ass on its way out, or who knows, maybe 2013 was oh-so-good to you? Hopefully the latter. One thing I do know is deadlines were a little wonky over the holiday, and yours truly started early on the Champagne (oops), so my end-of-the-year recap is running in the paper a wee bit late.Read more »

TABLEHOPPING I’m writing this end-of-year recap while looking at thousands of pictures of food from 2012 (oh, I see, that’s how I got these love handles). New Year’s Eve is just four days away, but my tidal wave of sparkles and bubbles is starting early at a party I’m hosting with Louis Roederer Champagne at Marianne’s, the private room at one of this year’s new hotspots, The Cavalier. Yes, it’s Champagne o’clock, and look at that, my watch is running fast. There’s a lot to toast this year! Read more »
